The Traveller Series: Top Tips for Beginners

When you think about traveling, what is the first thought that comes to mind? Is it the amazing places to visit, the once-in-a-lifetime experiences, or the people who will become friends for life? Whatever it may be, chances are you're not thinking about logistics or how it will make you grow as a person. By exposing yourself to different cultures and environments, you can learn so much about both the world we live in and yourself. Just remember, preparation is key.

However, as you may already know, life doesn’t always go according to plan—and funny enough, the same goes for traveling. Yes, some of us are guilty of booking a one-way ticket and figuring things out as we go. But from experience, it’s clear that planning ahead, even just a bit, is necessary. Sudden changes or unplanned expenses can crop up unexpectedly and if you're unprepared, they could potentially cause issues or cut your trip short.

In this article, I've outlined my top 7 tips to assist you along the way. If you're feeling a bit nervous, don’t worry—you won’t be the only one feeling this way, and you're bound to meet some amazing people during your journey.

Essential Travel Documents
Essential travel documents are a must for everyone, regardless of financial status:

    • Passport: Always required for international travel or as a form of ID. Check the expiry date to avoid potential entry issues.
    • Visa: Most countries require some form of visa (tourist, working holiday, student, etc.). Research visa requirements and processing times on government websites or consult third-party organizations for assistance.
    • Travel Insurance: In my view, travel insurance should be mandatory. Purchasing insurance before your trip can save you thousands in the long run. From my experience, it’s better to be safe than sorry—if you don’t have insurance, something will inevitably happen. Ensure your coverage includes all planned activities, especially extreme sports, though it may increase the cost.

Booking Flights
Booking flights or transport initially seems daunting, but with time, you'll become more familiar with the process and what to watch out for. Here are some tips:

    • Research: Use platforms like Skyscanner to compare flights from numerous travel companies, offering various flights, dates, and times. Alternatively, research airlines directly, read reviews, and choose the best option for you.
    • Discounts: Airlines often advertise discounted flights for specific dates and times. These deals can be found online, in travel agencies, or through social media platforms. For instance, I’ve recently spotted ads on Instagram from Virgin Australia.
    • Flight Insurance: Consider purchasing flight insurance, especially for expensive flights (note: this may differ from general travel insurance). You never know when a flight delay or cancellation might occur.
    • Change Flights: Opt for flexible booking options that allow you to change your flight date or time for free. This flexibility ensures you won't miss out on additional activities.

Booking Accommodation
There are several accommodation options available, with popular choices being platforms like booking.com:

    • Online Reviews: Consult travel blogs, hotel reviews, or seek recommendations from friends and family to aid your decision-making process.
    • Hostels: Staying in hostels is an excellent way to meet new people. Whether you opt for a shared or private room, it’s a great opportunity to make friends and save on costs.
    • Work for Accommodation: When I first moved to Cairns, I found myself short on funds and ended up working for accommodation. It was a straightforward arrangement that allowed me to earn money, make friends, and secure a place to stay. I highly recommend exploring this option.
    • Camping: Websites and apps like ‘Wiki Camps’ are invaluable for locating camping spots and rest areas, providing details such as costs, nearby national parks, tourist attractions, and facilities.

Meeting New People
Socializing is a key part of the travel experience:

    • Hostels: As mentioned earlier, hostels are vibrant social hubs where you can interact with fellow travellers in shared spaces or your accommodation.
    • Group Trips: Consider booking a group trip if you’re feeling apprehensive. It’s a great way to socialize and share experiences with like-minded individuals. My own travels began with a two-week group trip in Sydney through Gap 360, which boosted my confidence and introduced me to some wonderful people.
    • Engage: Strike up conversations with others around you; most people are open to chatting. Just be yourself—chances are, they’ll appreciate it.

Support Local
Supporting local communities enriches your travel experience:

    • Local Businesses: Often family-run, local businesses offer insights into culture and can recommend hidden gems and dining spots free of crowds and fees.
    • Respect: Show appreciation for local customs and traditions, reflecting on their efforts and contributing positively wherever possible.

Explore Your Surroundings
If you’ve travelled to a different country, don’t miss out on exploring:

    • Outdoor Activities: Venture outdoors to enjoy breath taking views, whether it’s from a mountain peak or another scenic spot visible from your hostel window. Activities like hiking allow you to experience new places, sounds, and smells while staying active and possibly meeting new friends who share your interests.
    • Connect: Immerse yourself in nature and the beauty of the earth around you.

Follow Your Own Path

I used to be a firm believer that ‘no plan is the best plan’ and for some circumstances I do think this is the case. It is so important to be prepared, but this can also mean having loose plans that can be easily changed. You may decide to stay in one place a little longer or meet some people and decide to travel with them. Whatever you do, make sure that it aligns with your journey, because quite often you will find that you bump into these same friends again but in another place.

If you still need persuading, I truly believe that travel is one of the most educational and eye- opening experiences that a person can have. Without realizing your path will change and you will gain a new perspective on life, who you are, and how you spend your time. Plus, there is nothing greater than finally seeing those amazing places in person and not through your mobile phone!

I could spend hours discussing travel, offering insights and tips, but part of the adventure lies in discovering it for yourself. To me, the beauty of travel lies in the unknown. I’ll leave the rest to you, so you can carve your own path, create lasting memories, and enjoy every moment along the way. If you ever want to chat, seek advice, or share your own travel tips, feel free to message me on Instagram. I’d love to hear from you.
